I am using the latest version of ubuntu on my machine and found the chinese support is still terrible. Compared with the default chinese font (or font configuration) used in FC5, the one in ubuntu looks not good. It is also not easy to get the chinese input system working and that is the reason why I am writing this in english.

Yes, agreed, linux/ubuntu is free and people are donating their own free hours on it to make things possible, my question here is after so many years why it is that difficult to make the chinese support better? Most of the linux users are still using the windows font files and usually one of the first things they do after installation is so called "optimization for chinese appearance", why that can't be done in ubuntu itself.

I am not trying to complain anything here, just want to share my terrible experience as a 5 years linux user and developer.

Take a look at my screen snapshoot, I do not think it looks terrible.
The neccessary thing you should do is do some tricks and tweak the fonts until you feel good.
That's right I am still using windows fonts only because they have good quality and I am accustomed to them.

deerlux,thanks for your suggestion. I am not just complaining, I am raising a very common question: why we can't make the chinese support out-of-box, just like what microsoft do for the windows version released 7 years ago.

quanliking, I just read your article, that looks good but takes too much time. Still the same question: why we can't make the chinese support better and out-of-box.

Someone need to push this to happen

其实并没有看起来复杂。
如果你不在乎 dpi 或以后再做这个工作。你简单通过下面的步骤可以得到大致的效果：
如果你用的是 ubuntu 中文安装，先做一下这个：
$ fontconfig-voodoo -s none -f

以免影响我的配置，然后做下面工作：
1。$ vi /etc/environment
LANG="zh_CN.UTF-8"
LANGUAGE="zh_CN:zh:en_US:en"

1。安装 ms core fonts
$ apt-get install msttcorefonts

2。$ mkdir /usr/share/fonts/truetype/winxp
拷贝 winxp 以下补充字体到该目录
tahoma.ttf tahomab.ttf simsun.ttf mingliu.ttc
$ fc-cache -fv

3。$ nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf
加入 FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/truetype/winxp"

4 。 dpkg-reconfigure fontconfig （可不做，假设你为 LCD）

5。
cp local.conf /etc/fonts/
修改里面的 dpi 这块为你的实际 dpi，或注释掉。同样修改 rgb  这块，如果是 crt 把 rgb 改成 none

cp cjk.conf /etc/fonts/
cp msttcorefonts.conf /etc/fonts/

restart gdm

输入法：
$ aptitude install scim-pinyin im-switch
$ im-switch -s scim-pinyin
quite gnome then login

local.conf

可以通过简单的设置就可以得到不错的效果，可是Ubuntu中文组就是做不出来，还整天高喊“中文问题全部解决”的口号欺世盗名。其实啊，Ubuntu中文组根本就不十分清楚中文字体设置要做哪些工作。到Fedora版看看，就是没有用户抱怨中文显示有问题，我想个人的口味不同，比较难统一，而且高品质的字体需要 money，特别是中文字体这块。可是Fedora啊就能够让用户没有任何的抱怨，可见Mandriva、Fedora的中文化是做得就是比Ubuntu好。

整天打着out-of-the-box 的口号，掩耳盗铃，真的OFTB了吗？当然会有卫道士跳出来说OFTB是很难的，可是SUSE、Fedora的中文化就是实实在在的OFTB,没有一点的虚假。可是啊SUSE、Mandriva、Fedora就不会到处打着OFTB的口号欺世盗名啊。SUSE、Mandriva、Fedora就是比Ubuntu好。

当然了，肯定会有人跳出来跟我急了，这是中国人的劣根，就是容不下别人不同的意见。有人反问，你这个垃圾md5，你就能了吗，这个吗不同的意见，反对的意见你垃圾MD5就能接受了吗？小的回答是：如果意见是对的，正确的，一万个反对，小的都能接受。

别来说什么Ubuntu中文组做了多大的努力，效果才是最关键的。Ubuntu中文组属于Ubuntu（简体）中文用户中水平比较好的一群。他们都搞不清中文化要做那些工作，你们普通的用户有能知道多少？你们清楚吗？你们清楚Ubuntu中文组做了那些实际性的有效果的工作吗？不清楚的，小的就简单的给你们总结一下：

1 预安装SCIM，中文环境下自动启动，不错，比较大的进步（Good job！）。但是没有什么值得骄傲的，SUSE，Fedora，Mandriva，中早就已经实现的了，领先了Ubuntu很多。

2 部分重复的翻译工作（So fuXking！）。Gnome，KDE，XFce的中文翻译，已经在发布的时候由linux i18n中文组的相对比较专业的人翻译成简体中文，根本用不上再去重复的翻译，而且Ubuntu中文组的翻译水平是极为差的，Jcome的评论中就很清楚的放映了出来。做不了的事就不要强出头。还是老老实实的采用linux i18n 中文组翻译出来的吧。还有就是Fundawang就实linux i18n 中文组的核心成员，你们用的中文GNOME大部分都是他翻译的，hoho。相信很多原来的Debian用户都会对Fundawang这号人物留下深刻的印象吧，hoho。

3 建议官方，把简体中文字体由文鼎体改成uming,这个对中文现实的确是由很大的改善的，但是呀，Fedora 也是和Ubuntu一样在中文字体噢，就是没有用户抱怨中文显示有问题。问题出在哪里呢？Freetype的调节，Fontconfig的设置，SUSE,Mandriva,Fedora 的Fontconfig设置比起现在的Ubuntu要好上十倍的。深一层次就不多解析，（打了这么多字有点累了，说了你们也不一定能明白，）

4 Fontconfig 分开语言设置，这其实不是Ubuntu中文组的功劳，是Ubuntu 官方专门请人做的，Ubuntu 中文组（当然中文组说的都是“简体中文组了”）只是负责把简体中文的配置设置好。可是啊，做不好就不要强出头啊，那些设置，简直就是不堪入目的丑（sucks！），这就是有用户抱怨的关键，SUSE，Fedora，Mandriva就是让用户没有任何的抱怨,Ubuntu 就是做不出来。Ubuntu Fontconfig的中文设置是如何的差法，就不详细说明了，说了你们也不懂，懂的你们不会认为我在语无伦次。认为我在语无伦次的说明你们就是不懂。

到这里肯定有人跳出来说，每个发行版都有它本身的优点和不足，没必要这样比较啊！不喜欢就不用吧！
可是啊，Ubuntu（中文）用户就是容不下别人说Ubuntu的不足的地方，不好的地方。只能说Ubuntu万岁，万万岁，伟大的Ubuntu！

I have both Fedora and Ubuntu on my desktops, please understand that linux is the only os on these two machines, I am going to use windows to work around any problem.

The reason why I post this thread has already been made very very clear. We should make such chinese support OUT-OF-BOX!Agreed, there are so many good men and women working hard to provide those nice well written docs on how to make the chinese looks better in ubuntu, why we can't merge it into the ubuntu and make it available to all users, available to them without any configuration?

The current situation is ubuntu is not better than the RH7.3 in term of chinese support. No real difference. That is my conclusion, conclusion based on my real experience.

ubuntu字体确实不需要美化，默认安装(需要网络安装中文支持)已经能够满足需要，不需要用户额外设置。我实在找不出哪里会有中文支持still bad的说法，当然个别中文标点符号显示的位置有待改进。还是建议楼主完整看完精华帖，网速好的话，一般在1个半小时就可以从安装到构建一个完整的中文应用。如果猜的没错的话，楼主应该是忘了这个！

至于终端的中文支持，X下面的虚拟终端是没有任何问题的，命令行模式下我没有中文输入需要，没有配置。

老大啊，写中文好不好啊，拜托了。ubuntu的输入法再烂还是可以打出中文字的。再说了，不行的话，用windows发文吧，我看得累死了。

lincomet先生写的ubuntu6.06安装和设置已经很详细了，基本上已经很好地构建了一个应用和开发平台。说句题外话，攻击某个发行版并不能体现你的先进性，特别是拿fedora的中文说事。
