Confused problem

I was little bit confused about the x windows problem, like, if i "apt-get install gnome" how can i start it??  it s not the command as: startx, right eh?
which command i can use to start gnome? and also what if i setup default run level to 5, it should run the xwindows based on my knowledge, but which CDE will be started?

edit .xinitrc and write:
exec gnome-session

then just startx
