http://sourceforge.net/mailarchi ... 8&forum_id=9587

20. > > wants to work out a gaim plugin based on that I think it would be
21. cool.
22. > >
23. > > Out of curiorisity, anyone know why the previos QQ plugin was
24. deemed illegal?
25. >

26. >
27. > "Tencet Inc. forced him to give up the development". That is
28. >just a guess made by other people. Neither Tencet Inc. nor
29. >ZouDan confirmed it. Even if this guess was right, we can only
30. >infer from it that the plugin had affected Tencet's profit, not
31. >that it had breaked Chinese laws.
32. >
33. > ZouDan's qq plugin(libqq), which is based on gaim, is not free
34. >software, but gaim is GPL'd. As I know, many Chinese say that
35. >ZouDan's GaimQQ(Gaim + libqq) is illegal because they think it
36. >broke GPL.
37. >

38. I also though that the libqq was illegal because it broke the GPL not that
39. breaking some other laws.

40. However I think the general relationship between e.g. Gaim and some IM
41. protocol owner such as ICQ or Tencent QQ is more interesting. For instance
42. QQ provides the IM access for 'free' by delivering advertisments to the
43. users, so I think the gaim or the QQ-plugin could include an option to see
44. these advertisements, then the owners of the IM-protocols wouldn't have the
45. need to block out e.g. gaim users (in case they were so evil).

46. I would like to see a framework for advertisement deliveries (of course an
47. optional plug-in or something). Anyway I suppose some people might even want
48. to see advertisements provided by the IM companies. Moreover users could be
49. 'forced' to see advertisements by the IM provider by including a password or
50. a code in the delivered advertisment messages that would activate the IM
51. account.

52. What do you think about this? Anyway this way the users could get the access
53. to the IM-network with mutually beneficially way (the company would have
54. their business and the users could choose their favourite GPL IM client).
55. And the companies might be more cooperative with the OS community. Anyway
56. the business is not in the protocol itself.

57. I think the issue of legality is not about the protocol or client themselves
58. but in the usage of the company's resources (the server).

59. At last I am very grateful for the Gaim and OpenQ developers for providing a
60. cool piece of software. I am quite happy with the functions of the OpenQ
61. plugin. The developers have done great job. Thanks!

16. seem to have implied that libqq was illegal because of the way it's written.

32. Now, how can you sign on to see the ads? Don't you need a password?

31. > > want to see advertisements provided by the IM companies. Moreover
32. users
33. > > could be 'forced' to see advertisements by the IM provider by
34. including a
35. > > password or a code in the delivered advertisment messages that
36. would
37. > > activate the IM account.
38. >
39. >Now, how can you sign on to see the ads? Don't you need a password?
40. >

41. I was thinking that the ads could be delivered to all the IM accounts but
42. then the client software could decide wheter show it or not. So the ad
43. message could include the recipents IM account number and automatically
44. generated code (or even a picture) in the ad. Then the user would have to
45. reply to the message by sending the code shown in the ad to the system
46. account (in case the IM network provider is dependend on advertisment
47. revenues) in order to 'activete' hers or his account.

48. This kind of framework could provide means for companies to choose to use
49. open source IM protocol and still making business by providing their
50. services. Now they just might block out the users who doesn't use their
51. client software. Besides I bet there would be several companies whou would
52. like to engage in IM business, but they can't because of the few strong
53. players in the market place.

54. In fact I was think this kind of system would work in other areas as well
55. such as DVDs (e.g. in China I saw that many movies had ads in them so that
56. they could be sold cheaper) but with normal ads people are just passive and
57. wait the ad pass by.

14. Dear all,

15. New to this list and greetings to all!

16. I read on the dev site archive that there's been some recent discussion for
17. QQ support by Gaim.

18. Any more follow ups on this?

19. I understand there was some concern by some that the code was reverse
20. engineered. But how is that different to all the other codes that support
21. AIM, MSN, Yahoo etc etc on Gaim and many other 3rd party clients?
