I CAN install kde and gnome both.

那也应该给人一个选择啊，XFCE4也有个类似Control Center的，蛮好的，为什么Gnome偏偏就要把它搞掉去呢？

就像你的上一个问题一样，你该知道随便下断语是不好的。比如，你看看SuSE10的gnome，它为什么就有个Control Center呢？gnome2.12的control center在这里：/usr/X11R6/bin/gnome-control-center，你可以编辑你的菜单添加它

gnome的菜单是可以编辑的，你可以按照你喜欢的一切方式去组织菜单项。当你掌握了这些方法之后，就不会再这样问问题。请参考以下内容：

1。菜单项保存的位置：/usr/X11R6/share/gnome/applications。这个目录中保存的是菜单项的文件，在文件浏览器里默认显示菜单项的名字和图标，而不是显示带后缀的完整文件名。实际上菜单文件是以.desktop为后缀的文件。桌面图标连接，菜单目录，面板上的图标连接等都是同样的。

2。OpenOffice.Org 2.0.desktop文件，你可以用任意文本编辑器建立它：

Name 默认名字
Name[zh_CN] 中文名字
Comment 默认注释
Comment[zh_CN] 中文注释

名字和注释如果你需要可以添加多项不同语言，如Name[fr] 法文，Name[zh_TW] 台湾繁体中文等，这样你就可以在不同语言的环境中使用它
Exec=定义执行文件的路径
Icon=xxxx.png 菜单的图标（默认为/usr/share/pixmaps目录的图表，其他目录的图表请输入完整路径）
Type=Application 表示是菜单项
Categories 所属上级目录

按照以上的方式编辑保存。

3。一般而言，执行一下chmod 444

4。重新启动X即可。

5。关于菜单的目录，同理。你可参照这个目录和目录里的文件：/usr/X11R6/share/gnome/desktop-directories

注：没有菜单项的菜单目录是不会显示。

关于XX跟YY的比较，如果能够从纯粹的技术角度，能够用各种分析和数据客观准确地去论述，倒也可以比较出一些各自的长处和短处。但是对于我们来说，却往往陷入个人习惯和好恶，而且并无深入理解，浮于表面，流于哪个更好看，那个更快等等这样的争论。软件在各种不同的环境中其性能和速度都会受到各种影响，而且基于强大的定制功能，软件的界面也呈现巨大的多样性。在我的电脑上，gnome的运行速度和效率比KDE快，菜单，图标，面板，操作方式等也都被我定制成我最习惯最喜欢的方式。但我并不会单纯说gnome比KDE好，更不会随便去把这个观点加给别人。实际上，两者各有优劣，在竞争和对比中两者都会不断发展和进步。如果有一天gnome在发展和竞争中消亡了，那么当然是用KDE更好。

另外，不必比较gnome和KDE哪个更好看哪个操作更方便，如果你对这两个桌面系统有足够的了解，你甚至可以把gnome定制成看起来操作起来跟KDE一个样子。我的gnome桌面可以跟Mac OS X媲美，但电脑毕竟是用来做事的，不是用来看的。有空多比较比较两者具体功能的优缺，谈论点具体的东西，似乎更有意义。而且有很多争论忽视了两者设计风格和理念的差异，你不能希望gnome像KDE，就像你不该希望Linux/Unix像Windows一样。

It DOES make sense before you can decide which one is better for you.
It could be TRUE that some people just enjoy diversity and wanna keep them both.
And some both DE have killer apps that nothing else matches.

一般用户是不会耐烦参照一个标准，写十几行代码就为了在菜单中增加一个项目的。

事实上GNOME的菜单编辑在可用性上一直有问题，2.8之前好像可以通过application:/// 这个vfs来编辑，2.10好像又不可以了，现在听说又有了个基本的菜单编辑器，现在听说Alacarte这个不错。2.10以后就没用过，所以也许有不正确的地方。
