In fact, it's for the better development of fc since the community has grown too large. Fedora foundation stop being an efficient way of managing the project.
Look at the blog:http://wtogami.livejournal.com/
It has been quite a while since I have last blogged (July 2005!) and much has changed in both my life and the Fedora Project since then. (I intend on blogging about all the events like graduating, moving to the American North East, my first trip to Japan, and other stuff later.) But for now I must state my personal feelings about this important news about what would have been the Fedora Foundation.
The news of "No Foundation" may seem alarming and upsetting at first glance, but the reasons behind this decision were necessary. The key reason for me personally was Max's point THREE, the part about the IRS requirements for funding a non-profit corporation. We currently cannot build a large enough community to sustain monetary donations at fast enough apace to fund the huge and growing organization that Fedora has become. By IRS rules, the community must fund through many small donations 33% of funds. Funding the bandwidth alone of Fedora downloads would be too heavy a strain on public donations ($750K in one year). Fortunately, Red Hat *is* interested in funding this growth because of the clear reasons of mutual benefit between the company and community.
Red Hat cannot afford to hold back progress by having to wait for community funding. We must instead pay for it ourselves in order to sustain this rapid growth. We didn't understand this back when we were building Fedora, but it is now clear from what it has become. |
