From time to time, installing Linux to notebook computers is always tricky. Unlike the desktop counterpart, hardware being used in notebook computers is usually close, proprietary and less compatible.
Before deciding which distro to install on your notebook, I recommend you download LiveCDs for testing. LiveCD is best for situation like yours that you can try before install.
There are many LiveCDs available. The Debian based Knoppix, being the 'mother' of LiveCDs and with supreme hardware detection, is the most famous. But there are others based on Slackware, MDK and Fedora. Some LiveCDs, such as Knoppix, are capable to be installed to harddisk.

IBM notebook computer used to have good compatibilities with Linux. I can run Knoppix (Debian-based), iBox (Gentoo-based) on my T41 without any trouble.
I think you may also think about it. |
