Most likely, your windoze partition is NTFS and is mounted read only.

If it is the case, you need to setup captive properly before you can write NTFS. Captive is available on the Knoppix LiveCD. Follow the instructions from http://www.jankratochvil.net/project/captive/

Normally yes but you may mount it writeable with captive. Please follow the instructions. Bare in mind, do not rely on the kernel NTFS support.

1. Unless you install Knoppix into your hard disk, root does not have password.  Certainly, you can assign password by passwd command.

2. As mentioned, captive is already available in Knoppix, you don't need any installations.  However, you do need to copy some files from your windoze for the NTFS writing operations.

If you are using FAT, you don't need captive.  Type:

mount

to see how your partitions are mounted.  Also, have a look at /etc/fstab.
