I think it's related to the fact that acoustic management is not
supported as well under Linux as it is under Windows. This
seems to be particularly true for SATA hard drives. As shown by
hdparm -I (see below), my 400GB Samsung doesn't have
acoustic mgmt enabled even though it's supported. So
far I haven't been able to find a solution for this. hdparm -M128
and -M254
fail with:
HDIO_SET_ACOUSTIC failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device
HDIO_GET_ACOUSTIC failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device
