vm - Subject: ibm and SUSE killed SUSE ( Nov 4, 2005, 18:35:59 )
While what you revealed here is not public and hope you didn't break any law(s), I agree with you about SUSE - I used SUSE V6.x and even then it was miles ahead of other distros. Recently, though, many distros closed that gap.
I am glad that they are getting rid of mono. They should NEVER have bought them in the first place. Anyone ( at least any business) planning to use C#/.NET for development will likely stick with windows. The whole purpose of .NET is to make use of windows as a platform. And integration of legacy windows tech like VB, ASP etc. Not to mention m$ has excellent dev tools for .NET which linux CANNOT match. Mono is wasting precious developer resources.
Regarding Gnome/KDE, here we have RH trying to maintain control over linux. Someday, if desktop linux takes off here, RH wants the biggest piece of it, one way or another. They do everything possible to run down KDE ( only because KDE is superior in every way), including making false statements about licensing. I think that the inherent superiority of KDE will help it prevail but US businesses may be sold gnome, mostly because they don't know better. They go to RH or IBM or Sun and those in turn go to RH.
Suse should NEVER have aligned with IBM - they lost focus. IBM threw some money at Suse and SUSE got tied too closely with IBM. Suse should have remained focused on the Govt. market in Europe, esp in Germany and if they had been a bit more patient, now would have been the time to expand their business. After Novell bought Suse, I already knew it was the beginning of their end.
JMHO.
