You should describe the filesystem that you are currently using because not all filesystem type can be resized.
If you are using ext2, then you may use parted or its GUI frontend like QTParted, gparted etc. Despite the parted homepage say that it can resize ext3 partitions, don't trust it. If you are using ext3, then you have to convert it to ext2 before the resize operation.
Although the resize operation should not do any harm to your existing data, it is always best to backup everything before the resize job. Also, it is better to do the resize operations under an individual operating environment, e.g. do it by booting a Linux LiveCD such as Knoppix (suggested) or SystemRescueCD (recommended).
