As for hdparm, it only just enable DMA (-d1), you may also enable ATA66 (-X66) or ATA100 (-X69?) to enable fast transmission rate. In addition, you may also increase the readahead buffer (-a1024)... to optimize the hard disk performance. The man page of hdparm can give you the information about the options. Ususally, I use:
hdparm -d1 -c1 -u1 -m16 -X66 -a1024 /dev/hda
My hard disk is a little bit old, it does not support ATA100+, but the above works very well. You may also do a simply benchmark with you hard disk before and after the execution of hdparm.
