我的系统本来启动到X桌面很快，现在启动时到浏览器图标时要停留很长时间，到X桌面以后打开窗口的速度也明显的变慢。我重新设置了网络，但结果还是一样。XD们能否给个建议？

When the system is running out of resources, it begins to use the SWAP on your hard disk to store temporary data.  This may be a possible reason.

1. What is your X桌面?  KDE and Gnome etc can be very memory demanding. Using a light-weight X-window manager such as icewm, fluxbox etc to reduce memory usage.  Can you post your result of "free" for study?
2. Try to reduce or close unnecessary daemon services in your system.
3. Try to optimize your hard disk performance by the hdparm command.

As for hdparm, it only just enable DMA (-d1), you may also enable ATA66 (-X66) or ATA100 (-X69?) to enable fast transmission rate.  In addition, you may also increase the readahead buffer (-a1024)... to optimize the hard disk performance.  The man page of hdparm can give you the information about the options.  Ususally, I use:

hdparm -d1 -c1 -u1 -m16 -X66 -a1024 /dev/hda

My hard disk is a little bit old, it does not support ATA100+, but the above works very well.  You may also do a simply benchmark with you hard disk before and after the execution of hdparm.

hdparm -tT /dev/hda
