Can kernel compiled from vanilla sourve be used on Mandrake 9.0?

I compiled a 2.4.20 kernel from vanilla source with mosix 1.9 patch
no error occured during compilation
but when i rebooted and tried to load the new kernel,
the screen went black. It was strange though that some harddrive activities could be heard after the screen went black and when i hit ctrl+alt+del to reboot, it didn't go right away, instead, just like a normal reboot, i waited for a couple of seconds before seeing the energy symbol on the right hand corner of the screen.
i just wanna know whether it was caused by some configuration error or in general vanilla kernel doesn't work on mandrake systems.
