Beginning next month with the Catalyst 9.4 release, support for the R300/400/500 generations of graphics processors will be dropped from AMD's mainline ATI driver. In a move they hope will allow them to focus their efforts on newer and upcoming graphics processors, the mainline Catalyst driver on both Linux and Windows will stop supporting cards older than the Radeon HD 2000 series. Linux customers affected will be encouraged to use their open-source driver stack (xf86-video-ati or xf86-video-radeonhd and Mesa) or stay with the Catalyst 9.3 driver.

While some ATI customers may feel disgruntled over the support being dropped on the R300/400/500 series, overall this is a good, strategic move. This will allow AMD to focus on bettering their support for the newer graphics processors and other products to be released in the future by narrowing the coverage of ASICs they need to test and support. While AMD may not be channeling greater resources to the development of their open-source drivers, at least the greater adoption of this driver should result in more testing and feedback to the driver developers. This Catalyst change is present on both Linux and Windows platforms.

文章大意是说：
ATI将不再对R300到R500，也就是9500到x1950，也就是HD2000以下显卡提供闭源驱动，9.3将会是最后一个版本。ATI会把R300到R500的驱动集中到一个旧驱动里面。不过不要多指望ATI在4月后会更新这些老驱动，而且也不要指望支持新内核和新xorg。你可以选择停留在老得驱动，但是更好得选择是开源驱动，因为开源驱动会一直提供支持，哪怕是很老很老的卡，也会对新的xorg提供。
然后说了一下，nvidia连个好得开源驱动都没有呢，叫我们不要太伤心（当然是我YY的，大概可能应该表达了这个意思）。。虽然新卡会对新的功能提供支持。
然后说了一堆要用开源驱动阿，开源驱动好哇，开源驱动性能还是不错地，虽然比闭源驱动是性能低那么一大截，但是眼光不能这么短浅，要看到马上到来的Xorg 7.5，新的dri2，新的内核KMS等等，会给linux上图形性能提高很多。。 |

，以后再也不买ati的显卡了，附带从此转向Intel的cpu，以抗议amd的不负责行为
