如果只安装了字符模式，没有安装X 系统，
能否使用带有窗口的应程序用（例如：Mozzila）？

如果需要安装 X 系统，
是不是不安装KDE、Gnome这些桌面也可以使用Mozzila？

用不用先“startx”，启动某个窗口管理器，
再执行Mozzila的应用程序？
还是在安装X系统后，字符下就可以启动Mozzila？

想要用图形界面的程序必须有X11的支持，如果只是想要在console下工作，上网软件也是有的，不过你说的mozilla必须用在桌面环境下，KDE，gnome，xfce，等等的一种中，而这些桌面管理器都需要X11的支持。

No, as explained by wjping119.

As long as you have X installed, KDE and Gnome are not compulsory.  But you do need a window manager such as blackbox, afterstep, fluxbox, icewm, twm, xfce, enlightenment or...

This depends on what window manager you have installed.  Some window managers such as blackbox, icewm etc are highly configurable.  You may edit the menus and save your work.  However, some very light window managers, such as wm2, are not configurable.  In this case, you have to invoke your applications in a terminal.

我已经明白了X 系统的作用，
它好象是一切桌面程序的基础。

d00m3d兄提到了好多Window Manager，
我都眼花缭乱了，
我不想使用Gnome、KDE这些过于庞大的桌面系统，
想使用一个不用太花哨、速度快、至少可以使用Mozzila的
窗口管理器。

能否推荐一个呢？

fvwm啦，xfce啦，icewm啦好多了，这些窗口管理器最大的特点就是占用资源少，可定制强，你可以择其中之一用之。不过建议新手用xfce顺手一些

fvwm is fast but it looks ugly. xfce and icewm are quite suitable for newbies.  When you are more familiar with X, then you may consider switching to blackbox or hackedbox.  These are lighter, faster and highly configurable.
